Course overview
The Companions
The word 'Sahaba' translates to Companions (male and female), the Companions of The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. There is a colossal amount of reports about the lives and times of the Sahaba. They are the best of people after the Prophets, therefore it is incumbent we look into their lives and explore further details of their struggles.
In their actions we find the perfect example and guidance for Muslims today. They sacrificed their lives and wealth for the sake of Islam and succeeded in assisting Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, spread the message of Islam and echo its teachings across the globe.
Learning about the Sahaba is a means of becoming altruistic and generous by witnessing their massive sacrifices. As we go through lives of these great individuals we will be inspired to emulate them and their immense efforts in serving others and improving ourselves as servants of Allah.
Luminaries of Islam
As a follow on from The Sahaba we will be looking into the lifetimes of great men and women of Islam over the centuries. This will include a mix of scholars, leaders, spiritual masters, scientists and activists.
Our rich tradition of Islamic History has brought to us many great individuals that led their field and Muslims to success and tremendous achievements. However, today, we find ourselves cut off from this narrative, clueless and somewhat stumped regarding our own history and legacy as Muslims.
As the great Malcolm X once said: "History is a people's memory, and without a memory, man is demoted to the lower animals." It truly behoves us to take look back into a tradition that brought the most benefit to mankind, a tradition that was built upon mercy and philanthropy.
We will be touching upon the lives of individuals by highlighting their achievements and their journey of dedication and sacrifice they. It is hoped that this will lead us to be inspired and follow suit in our societies.
Learning outcomes
The course will introduce students to the life and character of many blessed individuals retracing their footsteps through history that helped shape the Islamic world as we know it today.
On completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a better understanding and familiarity with these individuals, and the important role they played and how it has impacted us as Muslims. They will be able to understand the significance of following in their footsteps, and the need for this in the contemporary world.
