Course overview
Luminaries of Islam
As a follow on from The Sahaba we will be looking into the lifetimes of great men and women of Islam over the centuries. This will include a mix of scholars, leaders, spiritual masters, scientists and activists.
Our rich tradition of Islamic History has brought to us many great individual that led their field and Muslims to success and tremendous achievements. However, today, we find ourselves cut off from this narrative, clueless and somewhat stumped regarding our own history and legacy as Muslims.
As the great Malcolm X once said: "History is a people's memory, and without a memory, man is demoted to the lower animals." It truly behoves us to take a look back into a tradition that brought the most benefit to mankind, a tradition that was built upon mercy and philanthropy.
We will be touching upon the lives of individual by highlighting their achievements and the journey of dedication and sacrifice they endured. It is hoped that this will lead us to be inspired and follow suit in our societies.

Learning outcomes
The course will introduce students to the life and character many blessed individuals retracing their footsteps through history that helped shape the Islamic world as we know it now, with discussions from many different sources.
On completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a better understanding and familiarity with these individuals, and the important role they played and how it has impacted us as Muslims. They will be able to understand the significance of following in their footsteps and continuing their legacy.

Shaykh Waseem Ahmed
Manchester Shaykh Waseem is originally from Sheffield and currently resides in Manchester where he is the chairperson for ISNAD Institute and Director of the community initiative, Guidance Hub. He spent 7 years in Damascus, Syria, privately studying Theology, Jurisprudence, Legal Theory, Rhetoric, Logic and other disciplines with leading scholars including Shaykh Adnan Darwish and the late Shaykh Rashad Al-Shams. He also studied various branches of Arabic linguistics at Abu Nur Institute and specialised in Hanafi Legal Reasoning under Shaykh Mazin Bakir. In 2008, alongside his private studies, he was accepted onto the accelerated programme at Dawli Institute for Arabic and Islamic Sciences, in Damascus, which he completed in 2012. |
