The Light of Guidance Course Overview
This course offers a holistic introduction to the essential pillars of Islamic knowledge: belief, revelation, and Prophetic character. Students will study Aqeedah Tahawiyyah to establish a sound understanding of Sunni creed, explore the Ulum al-Qur’an to appreciate how the Qur’an was revealed and preserved, and immerse themselves in the Shama’il to develop love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through his character and lifestyle. The course concludes with a detailed Tafseer of Surah al-Mulk, connecting belief and knowledge with spiritual reflection and practice. Together, these studies aim to nurture conviction, deepen connection to the Qur’an and Sunnah, and inspire a life guided by faith and knowledge.
Our aim is to facilitate the study of Sacred Knowledge in a traditional way, giving students the opportunity to benefit from the company and instruction of teachers with a chain of transmission linking back to our noble Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. All the texts taught on this course have been distilled from the most authentic classical Islamic sources, as well as authoritative contemporary research.
On successful completion of the course students will receive a certificate of attendance.
1. Aqeedah Tahawiyyah – Foundations of Sunni Belief This course provides a comprehensive study of al-‘Aqeedah al-Tahawiyyah, the timeless creed penned by Imam Abu Ja‘far al-Tahawi (d. 321H). Students will explore the essential beliefs of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah, those shared by the scholars of the early generations and gain clarity on what distinguishes Sunni orthodoxy from deviant sects. Through explanation and commentary from classical scholars, the course will strengthen faith, purify understanding, and cultivate conviction rooted in knowledge. Key Themes:
The attributes of Allah and understanding divine transcendence
The reality of prophethood and finality of Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ
Qadar (Divine Decree) and human responsibility
The unseen world: angels, jinn, Paradise, and Hell
The status of the Sahabah and Ahl al-Bid‘ah
Faith, actions, and salvation
Learning Outcomes: By the end, students will:
Understand and articulate the key tenets of Sunni creed
Recognise historical theological deviations and their refutations
Strengthen their personal iman through intellectual and spiritual clarity
2. Key to Qur’an – Introduction to ‘Ulum al-Qur’an Key to Qur’an opens the door to understanding how the Qur’an was revealed, preserved, structured, and interpreted. This foundational course introduces students to the sciences of the Qur’an (‘Ulum al-Qur’an) and equips them with the tools needed to approach tafsir with respect, depth, and methodology. Key Themes:
Revelation (Wahy): its nature and stages
Compilation and preservation of the Qur’an
The seven Ahruf and Qira’at
Makki vs Madani revelations
Asbab al-Nuzul (contexts of revelation)
Principles of Tafsir and dangers of misinterpretation
Miraculous nature (I‘jaz) of the Qur’an
Learning Outcomes: By the end, students will:
Understand how the Qur’an reached us authentically
Identify and appreciate the various sciences related to the Qur’an
Develop an informed approach to reading and studying tafsir
3. Shama’il – The Beauty of the Beloved ﷺ Based on al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyyah of Imam al-Tirmidhi, this course immerses students in the luminous description of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. His character, appearance, manners, and daily life. It aims to nurture love for the Prophet ﷺ and inspire emulation of his noble example. Key Themes:
The physical description of the Prophet ﷺ
His clothing, food, and lifestyle
His humility, generosity, and mercy
His worship, prayer, and du‘as
His interactions with companions and family
Miracles and signs of his prophethood
Learning Outcomes: By the end, students will:
Deepen their love and reverence for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
Understand the Prophet’s ﷺ character as a model for human excellence
Apply aspects of the Prophetic Sunnah in their personal lives
4. Tafseer of Surah al-Mulk – The Guardian of the Grave
This focused tafseer course explores Surah al-Mulk. A powerful chapter that protects from the punishment of the grave and instills deep reflection on Allah’s creation and dominion. Students will study each verse with linguistic, theological, and spiritual insights drawn from classical tafsir works.Key Themes:
The Majesty and Power of Allah
The purpose of life and test of deeds
Signs of Allah in creation
Reflection on death, accountability, and the Hereafter
The role of Surah al-Mulk in spiritual protection
Learning Outcomes: By the end, students will:
Grasp the meanings and messages of each verse
Strengthen their faith in Allah’s power and mercy
Develop deeper khushu‘ and awareness of the Hereafter
Appreciate Surah al-Mulk as a nightly companion and source of salvation
