Tackling Health Inequalities: Highlights from Our Diabetes Seminar

At Guidance Hub, we are committed to addressing health inequalities in our community, and we recently took a significant step forward with our new Tackling Health Inequalities in South Asian Communities project. As part of this project Guidance Hub have developed a tackling health inequalities network that will meet approximately four times every year to discuss selected topics. On Saturday 12 October 2024, the network met to discuss diabetes. This informative session, chaired by Shaykha Noshin Gul, brought together community members to learn about diabetes management, prevention, and the broader implications of this health condition.

We were honored to have esteemed guest speakers share their expertise with us. Dr. Amjed Ahmed, a local GP, provided valuable insights into the importance of early diagnosis and management of diabetes. Dr. Naseer Ahmad, a vascular consultant, discussed the latest research and treatment options, highlighting how lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in managing diabetes. Lizzie Hughes from the Manchester Local Care Organisation shared resources available in our community for those living with diabetes, ensuring attendees left with actionable steps to take towards better health.

A standout moment from the seminar was when Tariq Mahmood shared his inspiring journey of reversing diabetes. His personal experience resonated with many in the audience, showcasing that with dedication and the right support, it is possible to make significant lifestyle changes for better health.

As part of our Tackling Health Inequalities project, we are excited to announce that we will be training individuals in our community to become advocates for health inequalities. These trained advocates will go on to educate others, fostering a ripple effect of knowledge and support throughout our community. This initiative aims to empower local residents to take charge of their health and well-being while sharing vital information with their peers.

The project is supported by University of Manchester NHS Trust and Manchester City Council, demonstrating a collaborative effort to enhance health education and resources in our area. Attendees left feeling informed and empowered, equipped with knowledge to better manage their health and support their loved ones.

This seminar is just the beginning! We’re excited to announce that our next session will focus on Cardiovascular Disease, continuing our mission to tackle health inequalities through education and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of this seminar. Together, we can make a difference in our community’s health and well-being. Stay tuned for more updates on our upcoming events!
